South Shore Lake Tahoe Offers Top Five Cures For Vacation Deprivation

Based on the recent Expedia Vacation Deprivation™ survey, Americans not only receive the smallest amount of vacation time among their counterparts abroad, they often fail to use it.

Expedia found that despite reporting an average of 14 paid vacation days in 2008, more than 45 million workers will leave an average of three vacation days on the table, in essence giving back more than 460 million vacation days this year.

A trip to Lake Tahoe is just what the doctor ordered; here are five tips for curing Vacation Deprivation.

Blue: How long have you been a resident of South Shore Lake Tahoe?
Jeff: I have been in Tahoe for over 30 years. I actually worked at the casinos while I was going to California State University, Sacramento.

Blue: Where did you move from?
Jeff: I moved from Sacramento in 1978.

Blue: I understand you are one of the few Ironman athletes that live here in South Shore, correct?
Jeff: I know of a few triathletes, but none that compete in the Ironman. The only other Ironman athlete in the area I know of lives in Gardnerville.

Blue: Where did you compete in the Ironman?
Jeff: I have competed at Ironman Coeur D'alene Lake Placid, NY the last six years; Ironman Utah in 2002; and Ironman California in 2001.

Blue: How long have you been involved in competition?
Jeff: I started doing Olympic distance events in 1998 and been hooked ever since.

Blue: Around South Shore where are your favorite places to bike, run and swim?
Jeff: My favorite place to swim is Nevada Beach early in the morning. My favorite ride is Kingsbury to Blue Lakes via Luther Pass. My favorite area to run is the meadow by Nevada Beach.

Blue:When is your next big race? Do you plan on biking or running around the lake during Lake Tahoe’s Marathon race in late Sept.?
Jeff: I am going to race in Santa Cruz at the Big Kahuna 1/2 Ironman in early September. I would like to do a swim event (2 mile swim++) and the bike race around the Lake during Marathon week in South Shore Sept. 24-28.

Blue: Training is practically a full time job, but what else do you do for a living in Tahoe?
Jeff: My wife and I both work two days a week at Harrah’s as Table Games Supervisor.

Blue: How else do you spend your time in South Shore?
Jeff: We try to enjoy the outdoors; anything from camping, hiking, biking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing to spending time at the beach. We also look forward to spending time with friends and drinking good wine.

Blue: Do you have a favorite dining spot?
Jeff: My favorite places to dine at are Edgewood Tahoe and the Lone Eagle Grill.

Blue: What do you do in the winter months for training?
Jeff: I swim at South Lake Tahoe rec center and run outside or on a treadmill in the garage. Actually, bike riding is possible all year long in the valley - the only real difference is the amount of clothing you must wear.

Blue: What is your favorite wintertime activity?
Jeff: My wife and I enjoy cross country skiing and snow shoeing through the endless trails and woods, especially when the trees are blanketed with snow.

Blue: What's an inside scoop that you could tell a new visitor to the South Shore?
Jeff: Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places in the world and it must be enjoyed outside. Each day is unique and special, so don't waste time complaining about the weather. Get outside and spend some time in a boat, a kayak or anything that gets you out on the lake. We are very lucky to be able to live and spend time here.
